Playas del Coco or Coco Beach is located between Playa Hermosa to the North and Playa Ocotal to the South. The town gets its name
from the many Coconut Palms that fill the area. The beach sets nicely in a horseshoe bay with scenic vegetation covering the rolling
hills.
Playas del Coco is a sport and commercial fishing town and a place where surfers can get a boat out to Witch’s Rock, one of the many
famous surfing spots in the country. It has also been known for being a vacation spot for Costa Ricans from inland cities such as San
Jose. However, these days more and more foreigners are coming…and staying. Just a few of the countries represented in Playas del
Coco include: Nicaragua, Canada, United States, France, Germany, Italy, Chile, Argentina, and Peru.
VACATION RENTALS IN:
Playa Ocotal is located at the end of a winding road just 3 Km
southwest of Playas del Coco. The beach is small and enchanting,
framed with high dramatic hills. The volcanic sand is dark, almost
black in areas and is fine and soft to the touch. Vast trees create
cool shade over a good portion of the sand and make this a popular
beach for picnicking.
The hills are peppered with striking villas and private homes that
look out across the open ocean. There is a resort here, a few hotels,
and a casual restaurant right on the beach. Bahia Pez Vela is the
next cove to the southwest and is even more secluded. Large rental
condos and a lovely restaurant are the only two things that call Bahia
Pez Vela home. Playa Ocotal and Bahia Pez Vela offer a quiet get
away, but are close enough to get to the action in minutes.

Playa Hermosa, or Hermosa Beach is the next largest beach community after Coco in the
Papagayo region and is located about 12 Km or 7.5 miles North of Playas del Coco. The name
literally translates to Beautiful Beach, and once there you will see why. The sand is light
colored and soft extending for just less than one mile with lush green hills all around.
The inland main street runs parallel to the water with 2 different entrances getting you to the
beach itself. Along these two side roads you will find boutique hotels, small resorts, upscale
condos, villas, homes, restaurants and bars.

The quiet and tranquil beach of Playa Panama is located just north of Playa
Hermosa. Enormous Guanacaste trees (the national tree) grow up from the dark
sand within feet of the ocean’s edge. The water is very calm and great for
swimming.
A resort is nestled in the flat, open space a few hundred meters from the water. A
couple of all inclusive resorts are on either end of the beach as well. Playa
Panama has a mountain lake-side feel to it and is definitely worth a stop.

Hermosa was the first place where Real Estate in the area really began to boom.
Since then lots, condos, and homes have been bought, sold, and re sold. On the other
side of the main street several sizeable condo developments crawl up the mountain
side offering the owners with magnificent ocean views.
Hermosa boasts being awarded the Blue Flag Beach Award (Bandera Azul
Ecologico), awarded by various Costa Rican authorities to those beaches displaying a
high level of cleanliness. Hermosa is a tight knit community, but always welcoming of
new comers. The Playa Hermosa Association has been a major role in the success of
the Playa Hermosa community. Come and see why so many people are investing in
Playa Hermosa.

The center of Playas del Coco exudes energy and local flavor. The paved main street runs
through town and ends right on the beach’s edge. Local and international restaurants and
bars, colorful shops, and street markets line this lively road. Many community services are
offered in Playas del Coco such as a large supermarket, bank, clinic, and Immigration office.
Now Playas del Coco is slowly transforming from a lazy local fishing town to a major hub of
the North Pacific. It is the largest of the Northern beach towns in area and has the most
potential for growth. The beginning development of upscale condo projects, single family
homes, and large commercial centers is proof of this potential. Plans for a marina and dock
are also in place. Playas del Coco is definitely a spot to check out during a visit to Costa Rica.
